Pangaea
Pangaea existed in during the Permian period. It was created about 300 million years ago. About 100 million years later it started to break apart and the continents drifted.
Alfred Wegener created the theory called the Pangaea theory that all of the continents were once joined together to make one giant land mass. It was called Pangaea. He also had five proofs:
Jigsaw Puzzle Fit: Matching coastlines. The continents seem to fit like puzzle pieces. (South America fits right
into Africa)
Plants and Animals Match: Fossils of late Paleozoic age were found on several different continents. South America and Africa have matching fossils.
Rock Match: South America and Africa have the same kinds of rocks. They also have the same mountains chains. Its like there cut in half.
Ice Matches: An ice sheet covered parts of India, Africa and South America.
Positions Don't Match: 300 million years ago the present northern continents were at the equator. Tropical plants were found in Antartica.
